An Unorthodox Easter: A Passion for those the church left behind
Novelist Elizabeth Cunningham, direct descendant of nine generations of Episcopal priests, unites her vocation and her lineage in a dramatic reading and liturgy based on her acclaimed, controversial novel, The Passion of Mary Magdalen.
Adapted so that it can stand alone, “An Unorthodox Easter” dramatizes the events of Passion Week from what Cunningham calls The Last Party to dawn in the Resurrection Garden. In story and song, Cunningham brings to life the lost voices of the Gospels’ women, their humor, their rage, their wisdom—and their divine redemptive power. The message of “An Unorthodox Easter” resonates with Jesus’s own sometimes forgotten unorthodoxy: Everyone is welcome at the Feast.
Cunningham is joined by her sister musician Ruth Cunningham, formerly of the acclaimed vocal quartet Anonymous 4, as well as percussionist David Budd of Sol Sonata. And the congregation is invited to sing—and dance. The evening culminates with an unorthodox communion in which all are invited to partake:
“An Unorthodox Easter” will be celebrated at The Church of St Luke in the Fields, an Episcopal Church in the heart of Greenwich Village, long known for its openness and community involvement. By offering her own unorthodox version of the gospel in an Episcopal church Cunningham has returned to her roots. Says Cunningham, “It’s possible that my priestly ancestors will be rolling in their graves, but I hope at least some of them will be dancing in the aisles.”
Three Lives Bookstore will provide books for sale at event.
Suggested donation: $10.

“The book becomes a gospel in itself…Anyone who reads it will never approach the canon in the same way again.
The Passion of Mary Magdalen is a tour de force.”
